Casino Issue Splits Kentucky

DANVILLE, Kentucky – As reported by the (Louisville, Kentucky) Courier-Journal: "Ace Billiards & Grill regular Neal Gordon sees no harm in occasionally playing the Kentucky Lottery and visiting Keeneland once a year, betting horses until he hits his $50 limit.

"But the 78-year-old real estate agent hesitates when the talk turns to allowing casinos in Kentucky.

"…In the geographic center of Kentucky, Danville residents last week reflected the split in Kentucky over expanded gambling and whether it would help the state in the long run.

"Voters such as Gordon, in cities that don't stand to benefit directly from casinos, could have a loud voice if a proposal for expanded gambling gets on the ballot as a statewide referendum.

"Even if the push for casinos stalls in Frankfort this year, gambling advocates appear to have switched their target demographic from lawmakers in the General Assembly to citizens in the general store.

"…Supporters see casino gambling as a way for Kentucky to compete with other states that have riverboat betting or slot machines at racetracks and as a way to fatten racing purses while stemming the flow of gambling dollars out of Kentucky. The most vocal opponents so far are groups concerned about the social costs of more gambling…"
