Casino Issue Splits Illinois City25 February 2004COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Illinois – As reported by the (Illinois) Daily Southtown: "About 200 people opposed to casino gambling told Country Club Hills leaders Monday to drop plans to bring gaming to their city. "Many people in the crowd, as well as aldermen Michael Brothers (1st) and Willie Smith (5th), wore bright yellow stickers that simply read 'No Casino!' "But some people in the crowd supported the casino project for the economic development it could bring to the area. "Southland Development Group wants to build a casino and entertainment complex on 275 acres near Interstates 57 and 80. "…The Rev. Jesse Reason, pastor of the Grace Missionary Baptist Church, said gambling is nothing more than the devil's work, and likely to bring prostitution and addictions to the community. "…But resident James Craig supported the proposal, saying it's more than just gambling. He pointed out the plan includes other developments such as a water park and retail stores…" |
