Casino Issue Debated in Iowa Town Meeting21 September 2004IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "A casino in Dallas County would generate jobs, provide property tax relief and lower water and sewer rates, proponents told residents at a town hall meeting Thursday. "Residents were even told they could help decide where casino money goes by selecting who goes on a board that represents the casino group. "But be wary, opponents warned, because all the numbers they have heard are only estimates, which put the projected revenue for the city that lands a casino at between $4 and $5 million a year. "Waukee city officials said they sponsored the town hall meeting, attended by residents both for and against a casino, to educate residents and help them make an informed decision about the casino. "…Jamie Buelt, a spokeswoman for Wild Rose Development LLC - the group that wants to bring a casino to Dallas County, Warren County or Madison County - told residents the casino would be more than just gambling. "…Tom Taggart, a rural Waukee resident and member of grassroots group Sink the Boat, which is opposed to the casino, told residents he hadn't seen a feasibility study or a market study from Wild Rose, so all the numbers the group has provided are only estimates…" |
