Casino Hurricane Measure Passed

JACKSON, Mississippi – As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "The Legislature on Tuesday passed a measure that would afford casinos more protection from hurricanes and saltwater corrosion, without provisions Sen. Billy Hewes III was pushing to tighten regulations on where casinos can be built on the Coast.

"The bill, by Rep. Danny Guice, R-Ocean Springs, allows casinos, which by law must be on navigable waterways such as the Mississippi Sound, to anchor their barges with permanent pilings. It now moves to the governor, who is expected to sign it.

"Hewes, R-Gulfport, had amended the Senate version of the bill to add strict guidelines on where casinos can and cannot be located.

"…On Tuesday, Hewes backed off his position, and spoke, then voted, in favor of the original Guice version. He said he had been promised by Gaming Commission leaders that the agency would publish a map of where casinos can and cannot go by June of next year, just as one of his amendments required…"
