Casino foes won't disclose campaign info

KANSAS -- As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Wichita billionaire Phil Ruffin has spent $800,000--and counting--trying to get Sedgwick County voters to say 'yes' to expanded gambling.

"Meanwhile, the chairman of No Casinos in Sedgwick County refused to say who is funding its campaign or how much the group has raised.

"State law does not require such groups to disclose that information until Dec. 31. Ray Thomas, a Wichita resident, said he was upset that the group wouldn't say more before the election.

"...Voters have the right, Thomas said, to know who is trying to influence them. The anti-casino campaign has focused, in part, on the social costs of gambling, and it has said that a casino would cannibalize the Wichita economy.

"...Ruffin volunteered how much he had raised on Tuesday, even though a spokesman for Yes for Progress earlier had said the group would not release the information..."
