Casino Escape Debated10 January 2006TRENTON, New Jersey -- As reported by New Jersey.com: "By a 5 to 1 margin, the state Assembly voted Monday to approve Gov. Richard Codey's ban on public indoor smoking. "Dubbed the New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act, is aimed at protecting workers and others from secondhand smoke. It would make it illegal to light up in bars, restaurants and most indoor public places. "It's passage in a 62-12-2 vote followed weeks of speculation and tension between Codey and Democrats in the Assembly who remained hesitant to clear it. "...Under the legislation, which has already cleared the Senate, violations would bring fines ranging from $250 for a first offense to $1,000. "Among the exceptions to the prohibition are cigar bars, tobacco retailers and Atlantic City casino floors. The casino exemption proved a sticking point for many. "Some argued the bill was unfair to business owners and patrons..." |
