Casino employees barred from public washrooms24 July 2007ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "When it comes to using the public restrooms, casino employees should follow two words of advice: Hold it. "Although guests probably don't know it, there is an edict at most casinos in town barring employees from the public potties. The same is true for guest elevators and public phones. "This isn't just another bad bathroom joke. Employees risk being disciplined or even fired in some cases, according to the casinos that have such policies. "One policy was outlined in explicit detail in memos that circulated recently at Tropicana Casino and Resort. Employees said they were required to sign papers acknowledging that they would abide by the rule. "...Atlantic City's 11 casinos are massive buildings that have a maze of so-called 'back of the house' facilities for their employees, including bathrooms, lounges, dining areas and service elevators. Casinos don't want their employees clogging up the public restrooms and guest elevators because it could harm customer service by forcing patrons to wait, particularly when they are checking out of the hotel, officials said. "...Robert McDevitt, president of Local 54 of UNITE-HERE, the gaming industy's largest labor union, said the no-public-bathroom rule has been pretty much standard since the inception of casino gambling in Atlantic City in 1978. He said most casinos have adequate facilities for their employees, but he criticized Tropicana's new owner, Columbia Sussex Corp., for making cutbacks in its bathroom cleaning staff..." copyrighted material written for and appeared exclusively in The Press of Atlantic City |
