Casino Discrimination Lawsuit Dismissed

1 October 2004

ILLINOIS – As reported by the Chicago Daily Herald: "A lawsuit against the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin that began with a bang six years ago has ended in a whimper.

"U.S. District Court Judge Martin C. Ashman dismissed a claim of discrimination against blacks who applied for dealer positions at the boat. The case was filed in 1998 by three women and a man who had applied for dealer positions and been turned down. To much media fanfare, they successfully argued the case should be certified as a class action suit, and at one point there were 37 parties to the case.

"…Last week, Judge Ashman dismissed the suit, ruling that Ellis' history of job hopping at several casinos and English's daytime teaching job may have been legitimate reasons for the Grand Victoria not to hire them, and did not show a pattern of discrimination."
