Casino, Bank Share Blame in Swindle7 January 2004NEW YORK – As reported by the New Jersey Star-Ledger: "In a case of a swindler bilking the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort out of $370,000 in chips, the casino scored a hollow win against the Bank of New York, which a judge found shared blame for an altered teller's check being honored. "But while Superior Court Judge W. Hunt Dumont in Morristown held the Bank of New York liable, he also found that the casino only proved that it lost $40,000 -- the amount in chips the thief cashed in. "Dumont ordered the Bank of New York last week to pay Trump Taj Mahal $21,040 -- half the $40,000 loss plus the amount of the teller's check before it was altered. The judge found the casino was equally to blame for not verifying the check with the Canadian bank that issued it, as its own regulations require…" |
