Casino Aztar layoffs hearing planned for March

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- As reported by the Evansville Courier & Press: "It now will be March at the earliest before the Indiana Gaming Commission hears the report of an investigation into layoffs at Casino Aztar in Evansville.

"By the time state gaming agents report back to the seven-member commission, about a year will have elapsed since Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel first asked the commission to investigate.

"Weinzapfel's request for an investigation alleged the new owner, Columbia Sussex Corp., had not lived up to staffing-level commitments it made last year.

"Casino Aztar once employed about 1,200 workers; but shortly after Columbia Sussex bought Aztar Corp. for $2.75 billion, 20 jobs were eliminated from the Evansville riverboat complex, followed by 70 more. Additional smaller cuts followed.

"The agents' report on the investigation, originally anticipated at the commission's September meeting, has been repeatedly postponed, and the commission did not discuss it at its public meeting Thursday..."
