Carter Lake City wants more casino information

IOWA -- As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "The Carter Lake City Council approved a resolution Wednesday saying that although a proposed casino might be beneficial to the city, more information is needed on the project.

"The resolution calls on the city, Pottawattamie County and the State of Iowa to get as much information as possible concerning the Ponca Tribe's plan for a casino on five acres of land in Carter Lake.

"Several council members said they need to see what kind of casino the tribe has in mind.

"Mayor Russell Kramer said Larry Wright, chairman of the Ponca Tribe, has told him that should a casino be built, the tribe would be involved in infrastructure improvements in Carter Lake and would help add police officers in the city.

"...The County Board is considering whether it will join Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning's lawsuit that seeks to stop the casino.

"...Tribal leaders successfully lobbied to get the Carter Lake land placed into a federal trust nearly a decade ago. That designation gives the property many characteristics of reservation land, including the ability to build a casino that is exempt from state taxes..."
