Cape Cod businesses against casino2 January 2008MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the Cape Cod Times: "The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce board of directors has taken a position against casino gaming in Massachusetts, saying that gambling facilities could exacerbate an already severe labor shortage on the Cape. "...If a large-scale casino resort were developed in Middleboro or New Bedford, Neitz said, local residents could leave their jobs on the Cape, making it even more difficult for Cape employers to staff their businesses. "Gaming has become a hot issue in the state since the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe gained federal recognition in May and began pursuing plans to develop a casino somewhere in Southeastern Massachusetts. "In September, Gov. Deval Patrick unveiled a proposal to allow three casinos in the state, which he said would generate 20,000 new jobs and more than $2 billion in annual economic activity. "The debate has only grown more heated since that time, with legislators, community leaders and business groups pressed to choose sides on the issue..." |
