Canterbury Park Reveals Casino Proposal9 March 2005MINNESOTA – As reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "Backed by a bipartisan group of Minnesota legislators, owners of the Canterbury Park racetrack today announced their latest proposal for a state-sponsored casino at the track in Shakopee. "The track's proposal would pay the state an up-front licensing fee of $100 million -$100 million less than a rival state-tribal casino plan backed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. "The significantly larger casino proposed by Pawlenty and three northern Minnesota tribes also is projected to net more money for the state on an annual basis: about $143 million a year from the Indian operation vs. about $103 from the Canterbury plan. "But many legislators, as evidenced by the turnout today, are more enthusiastic about the so-called 'racino' that Canterbury wants to operate. The Canterbury plan would subsidize higher purses for the track's horse races.
