Candidates Oppose Subsidy for Gaming Site Improvements

ERIE, Pennsylvania -- Republican Dale McBrier and Democrat Mark DiVecchio don't agree on much in their race to be Erie County's new executive, but they agree there should be no public subsidy for improvements to the proposed site of a new racetrack and casino.

Officials with MTR Gaming want the public to chip in $37.5 million in improvements they say are needed at the proposed site of Presque Isle Downs in Summit Township.

Under the deal, MTR Gaming would pay for the infrastructure upfront, but would get the money back by having the Summit Township Industrial Economic Development Authority pay it back over 10 years at a low-interest rate, probably about 3 percent, the company said.

The authority would own the land for 10 years while the money was paid back. It would be up to the authority to repay the money using county and township slot machine revenues, state grants or other sources.
