Canadian Police Bust Two Suspected Gambling Dens

" The Ontario Illegal Gaming Enforcement Unit, assisted by London police and the OPP, made arrests and seized gaming equipment at the Glen Cairn Social Club (The Bar) at 150 King Edward Ave. in the Glen Cairn Plaza, and at the York Cafe and Bar at 768 York St. near Glebe Street.

"...OPP Det.-Const. Joe Caruso said both locations are suspected of conducting high-stakes poker games -- not the kind played in glitzy casinos but in industrial parks or old restaurants away from public display.

" The game of choice is called Texas Hold 'em Poker, which isn't offered in casinos and has the potential for high payoffs, Caruso said.

" But it's the house that makes the big profit, he said, noting a 24-hour Hold'em operation, that might be found in a big centre such as Toronto or Montreal, has the potential to earn $1-million a year in tax-free income..."
