Canada Safety Council Urges Halt to Casino Expansion

CANADA – As reported by the CBC: "The Canada Safety Council is calling for a moratorium on casino and gambling expansion across the country because about 360 problem gamblers are committing suicide every year.

"…The national safety watchdog is calling on provinces to halt any expansion plans and to bring in rules to help save pathological gamblers from their addictions, including measures to impose controls on casino advertising; monitor slot machines and video lottery terminals; place limits on how much people can lose before they are cut off from gambling and put an end to 24-hour-a-day casino operations.

"…The council has written to Prime Minister Paul Martin, federal Justice Minister Irwin Cottler, and all provinces and territories. It is suggesting that a royal commission might be needed to determine what role governments continue to play in the suicides…"
