California's Law Enforcement Oppose Gambling Measure

SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "In a blow to backers of a proposed gambling initiative, the state's police chiefs and sheriffs have voted to oppose the measure, which had been rolled out with high-profile law enforcement support.

"The initiative could put slot machines, now allowed only at Indian casinos, at racetracks and cardrooms.

"'Hiding it behind public safety is a sham,' said Rick TerBorch, president of the 335-member California Police Chiefs Association.

"…The police chiefs' board voted unanimously to oppose the initiative, introduced last month by some of the state's major racetracks and cardrooms.

"The executive board of the California State Sheriffs' Association also voted to oppose the measure, but agreed to withhold public discussion of its position until at least two prominent sheriffs supporting the measure have a chance to weigh in.

"…The initiative would require all of the state's more than 60 gambling tribes to sign new agreements that dedicate 25 percent of their revenues to the state and local governments.

"In addition, the tribes would have to agree to abide by state environmental, political reform and gambling control laws…"
