California Voters May Decide Slot Issue

OAKLAND, California – As reported by the (California) Daily Review: "Voters here may be asked in November whether they would like to feed quarters into slots or go all-in on a hand of no-limit poker without leaving the city limits.

"Mayor Jerry Brown on Friday presented several members of the Oakland City Council with details of a proposal from representatives of the Alturas Rancheria band of Indians who say it would pay the city of Oakland $40 million a year and add 4,000 jobs.

"But the reaction of several council members to the proposal was lukewarm. The council hasn't yet decided whether to even call a special session during the first week of August to consider placing a measure on the ballot asking voters how they feel about legalized gambling in Oakland.

"…The proposed casino, perhaps to be built near Oakland International Airport, would be operated by Las Vegas-based Barbary Coast, which runs a pirate-themed casino on the Strip. Barbary Coast representatives did not return a phone message left Friday afternoon…"
