California unlikely to restore gaming funding

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the California Press Enterprise: "The California Legislature, rushing to finish its work for the year, seems increasingly unlikely to restore millions of dollars that would help Inland communities deal with the burdens of nearby tribal casinos.

"Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed the money last month before signing the 2007-08 budget. He axed all but a fraction of $30 million allocated by the Legislature to help cities and counties deal with the traffic, crime and other by-products of tribal gambling.

"Riverside County would have received the biggest share.

"...Inland lawmakers and local officials have scrambled to resurrect this year's funding before the Legislature's expected adjournment Tuesday. So far, though, they have gained little traction.

"Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City, said she is trying to introduce a bill in either the Assembly or the Senate -- or both -- to restore the money..."
