California Tribes Team Up8 January 2004SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the Los Angeles Times: "As half a dozen American Indian tribes agreed to ante up $1.5 million each to derail a move to end their monopoly on Nevada-style casinos, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed a former Wilson administration official to negotiate new gambling deals with them. "…A memo describing early plans for the tribes' anti-initiative effort says they will fight the measure, sponsored by competing gambling interests, by marshaling their forces into a single campaign. "The tribes have hired high-profile political strategists Dan Schnur, a Republican and former top aide to Wilson, and Garry South, a Democrat who was chief strategist for former Gov. Gray Davis. They also plan to retain law firms to challenge the measure's constitutionality, the memo says…" |
