California tribes sues over slots

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the California Appeal-Democrat: "Can one slot machine actually be several?

"That question is reviving a long-simmering court battle between state gambling regulators and the tribe that owns the Colusa Casino Resort.

"The Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians sued the California Gambling Control Commission this week in U.S. District Court in Sacramento.

"The tribe seeks to have multiscreen gaming terminals declared single, not as multiple, machines – a move that could boost revenues at the casino despite a state cap on the number of slots there.

"...Multi-player slot machines feature several computer screens, all controlled by one random-number generator – the device that produces game outcomes. All players wager on the same outcome rather than several ones.

"...However, the Gambling Control Commission has sought to classify each screen as a separate machine. That would effectively render the multi-player games illegal by putting the Colusa Casino over its allowed number of slots, which the tribe's complaint said would endanger its gaming pact with the state..."
