California tribes contribue $1 million to campaign9 August 2007SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: "Two Indian tribes with their own casinos will contribute $1 million to the first stage of a ballot campaign to overturn expanding multi-billion dollar gambling agreements for four other tribes, including the Palm Springs-based Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, a representative said Wednesday. "`The Pala Tribe and the United Auburn Tribe are going to help with the signature-gather process through their own political action committee,' said Doug Elmets, a spokesman for both tribes. "...The money will aid Unite HERE, a labor union, and the Bay Meadows Land Co., which owns two horse racing tracks, to collect 433,971 signatures for each of four referenda to give voters a chance to kill the four revised compacts at the Feb. 5 presidential primary election. "...In the past Pala and United Auburn representatives also have criticize the formula for state payments in the revised compacts as given these tribes a competitive advantage over them and other tribes with similar compacts. "Finally, Pala and Unite Auburn are upset with the side agreement that the four tribes had to accept in the Assembly to get their compacts approved, dealing with isuses such as audits and workers' compensation..." |
