California Tribe Will Proceed with Casino Plan

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Hesperia Star: "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proclamation two weeks ago that he would not allow any casinos to be built in 'urbanized areas' of more than 100,000 people will not interfere with the proposed casino in Hesperia, according to the dominant tribal council of the Timbisha Shoshone.

"The Joe Kennedy-headed tribal council issued a statement last Monday night in response to Schwarzenegger's proclamation. The Timbisha Shoshone are currently split politically, with two competing tribal councils. Kennedy's council is working with the Rinaldo Corporation casino developers on the proposed casino to be built at Main Street and Interstate 15.

"…Hesperia was specifically listed as a city prohibited from having a casino in a list of more than 200 incorporated cities and towns that accompanied the governor's May 18 proclamation. Apple Valley and Victorville were also included on the list. The city of Barstow, which is in the process of developing a casino with the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians, was not on Schwarzenegger's list…"
