California Tribe Wants Casino

WILLOWS, California – As reported by the Chico Enterprise: "Already surrounded by Indian casinos in neighboring counties, Elk Creek's Grindstone Rancheria of Wintun-Wailaki Indians wants the support of the Glenn County Board of Supervisors to build its own.

"The board will consider the tribe's proposal to develop a casino on 280 acres located at I-5 and County Road 39, five miles north of Willows.

"…The tribe has secured a lease/purchase option for the property, according to a letter from the rancheria addressed to the board.

"Although Grindstone Rancheria could put a casino on its reservation, the tribe has limited available land. Also, the county has designated the Elk Creek area for agricultural uses, which could conflict with a casino project, said Tribal Chairman Kenneth Swearinger in the letter.

"Before a casino can be built, the tribe has to follow several steps involving approval from governmental agencies. Besides the supervisors' support, requirements include getting approval from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. The site will have to be placed in trust, and the tribe will have to submit an environmental impact report.

"The tribe will also have to negotiate a gaming compact with the governor that must also be approved by the state Legislature and the Secretary of the Interior, documents say…"
