California Tribe Looks at Casino Move Proposal

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Hesperia Star: "Members of one of two Timbisha Shoshone Tribal Councils are looking at a proposal to move their casino venture from Hesperia to a sprawling 310-acre site near Newberry Springs.

"Tentatively called the Grand Tosanna Casino, the proposed $560 million project would include a casino, hotel and spa resort, golf course, galleria, promenade, townhouses and single family homes.

"The project, which is proposed by Los Angeles-based American Equity Bancorp, could be completed in 2008, according to a proposal sent to Chairman Joe Kennedy on April 9. The tribal council requested information on the business venture in a letter dated Feb. 14.

"Although American Equity Bancorp would be the lead agency, the company would consider partnering with the original developer, Rinaldo Corp., or Nevada Gold & Casinos, Inc., both of which have entered competing casino agreements with Timbisha tribal members.

"…The location has numerous benefits, Martinez suggests. The site, which technically is in the town of Dunn, is located 35 miles northeast of Barstow and 80 miles south of the Nevada border on Interstate 15, providing easy access to populous southern California areas.

"…The casino also could help the Native American community by infusing a majority of its profits into the Timbisha Shoshone tribe, he added…"
