California Tribe Continues Casino Effort16 June 2006BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "Despite the thumping Measure H received at the polls, the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe will continue to try build a casino here, the tribal chairman Charles F. Wood said Thursday. "Measure H, on the ballot in the June 6 primary election, would have created a casino zone, which would include land for a planned Chemehuevi casino but excluded an area where two other Indian bands hope to build a casino. "The ballot measure did not name any tribes or Indian bands, Wood said Thursday, so it does not affect his tribe 'in any way.' "…Their locations don't necessarily make great casino sites, he said, but he believes local tribes should have preference. The five tribes are San Manuel, Twentynine Palms, Fort Mojave, Colorado River Indian Tribes and the Chemehuevi, he said…" |
