California Tribe Behind on Bills

INDIO, California – As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is about six months behind in paying its bills and has reduced the amount of monthly payments to its 32 tribal members as it continues to grapple with financial problems.

"Meanwhile, its Fantasy Springs Resort Casino is taking a full 90 days to pay its vendors, according to casino officials.

"…A check of Riverside County court records Friday showed five mechanic liens totaling about $3.1 million had been filed against the East Valley Tourist Development Authority, which operates the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino independently of tribal operations, and another $73,000 against Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

"…The tribe's financial troubles surfaced in April when it dismissed its entire police and fire departments as well as six administrative staffers. That was followed by the firing of its three top executives on May 5…"
