California Tribe Accepts County, City's Conditions23 August 2005LOS BANOS, California – As reported by the Mercred Sun Star: "Local governments expect a landless Stockton tribe to cut a big check before putting up a casino in or near Los Banos. "Stockton's California Valley Miwok Tribe will have to shell out cash for an expansion to the local hospital's emergency room, road improvements and services for gambling addicts before it can get an approval from Los Banos and Merced County to build a Westside casino, according to wish lists submitted to the tribe by the local agencies. "…Miwok tribe spokesman Tom Saggau said the tribe accepts the city's and county's conditions. "…Neither local government has the power to turn down the tribe's request because gaming agreements for sovereign Indian groups are negotiated with the state…" |
