California tribal leaders continue compact campaign

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: "Tribal leaders seeking approval of revised gambling compacts returned Monday to the Capitol, where they met with Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles.

"The five compacts, which would allow the tribes, including the Palm Springs-based Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Cabazon-based Morogno Band of Mission Indians, to add a total of up to 22,500 slot machines statewide, are pending in the Assembly. Núñez has said a number of issues must be addressed before the tribal-state agreements can be approved.

"...Richard Milanovich, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, would say only that the tribes are making progress.

"...The tribal delegation, which met separately in a different Capitol room after meeting in Núñez' office, included Henry Duro of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and Danny Tucker, chairman of the Sycuan Band of Mission Indians..."
