California tribal gaming grants cut

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the San Bernardino Sun: "Local governments might feel the sting of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's $30 million in cuts to Indian gaming grants statewide.

"The current state budget doesn't include a provision to fund the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund, which has provided $1.8 million to local governments in the area to offset crime and transportation problems in the area surrounding San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino.

"...The governor's decision was influenced by a statewide audit that showed local governments using their apportioned money for expenses unrelated to Indian gaming. However, local recipients, including San Bernardino County and the cities of San Bernardino and Highland, say the audit doesn't apply to them.

"They have used money from the fund - which includes cash from the San Manuel tribe and other gaming tribes - for gaming-related law enforcement and traffic control near the casino.
