California Tribal Casino Officially Unveiled

CALIFORNIA --Standing outside the new $70 million structure, tribal member Mike Hedrick recalled Gold Country's growth from a triple-wide mobile to the six-story, glass-accented casino and hotel.

"Years earlier, the council for the Berry Creek Rancheria of Tyme Maidu had brainstormed about ways to help the tribe's members, some of whom lived in homes without power or running water.

"…Eight years ago, the mobile trailers and bingo, slots and a few tables appeared on the Olive Highway. A few years later, the tent-like 'sprung structure' went up. Next came a showroom that has featured top-name entertainment, and now the new casino, which opened late last year.

"Saturday was the grand opening of the 240,000-square-foot, Las Vegas-style casino and 87-room hotel, all of which employ roughly 700 full and part-time employees.

"…Promotions director Jim Mangus noted the new facility allows the tribe to draw in more people who enjoy gaming, as well as tourists in the area looking for somewhere to stay.

"Besides the 87 suites, most with whirlpool baths, there are two restaurants a 24-hour cafe, and lunch and dinner buffet. A steakhouse is expected to open Wednesday.

"…Live entertainment will be scheduled in a lounge, and a nearby piano lounge hosts weekend shows. The existing showroom will continue to showcase entertainers like Feb. 14's Michael Bolton.

"Bingo and poker will remain in the sprung structure…"
