California tribal casino delayed

JAMUL INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: "The Jamul Indian band had planned to be building its controversial casino by now. Instead, a final environmental report on the fiercely contested project has been delayed more than a month and isn't expected until mid-December at the earliest.

"Tribal leaders and their Sacramento environmental consultant say detailed revisions of an August draft report have taken longer than expected to complete, mainly to address traffic concerns and other criticisms raised by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state transportation officials.

"'We're being very conservative,' said Jamul tribal Chairman Leon Acebedo. 'We're just making sure that everything we need to do in regard to this project' is done.

"…The draft report predicted the multistory casino would generate an average of 7,714 vehicle trips a day, and a 12-story hotel planned as a second phase would raise that number by an additional 1,200 vehicles.

"…Under its 1999 state gambling compact, the Jamul band is required to make good-faith efforts to mitigate off-reservation impacts of casino projects…"
