California Tightens Tribal Casino Rules17 June 2005SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the San-Diego Union-Tribune: "The Schwarzenegger administration continued to tighten its ground rules for Indian casinos in a new pair of agreements released yesterday. "The 20-year deals grant two of the state's largest tribes – the Quechan of Imperial County and Yuma, Ariz., and the Yurok of Klamath in far Northern California – compacts authorizing two of the smaller casinos in the state. "Quechan can operate up to 1,100 slot machines and the Yurok up to 350. Each also can have only one casino, although both have among the state's largest reservations. "…Quechan tribal leaders agreed to give up the right to operate a second casino under a compact they signed with former Gov. Gray Davis in 1999. The Davis compacts also entitled all tribes to at least 350 slot machines and as many as 2,000. "…The administration still may be smarting from the intense public opposition that has blocked a large new Indian casino it approved in the San Francisco suburb of San Pablo. Schwarzenegger agreed to 5,000 slots at the site. The Lytton band voluntarily cut that in half, but the compact remains stalled in the Legislature…" |
