California Starts Tribal Gaming Compact Talks23 January 2004CALIFORNIA – As reported by the California Desert Sun: "Following up on the governor's campaign pledge to collect more Indian gaming revenue, the state started tribal compact negotiations Thursday in a meeting with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and six other tribes. "'Basically there's a lot of work to be done,' said Tribal Chairman Maurice Lyons. "He and other tribal council members attended the meeting in Sacramento with Daniel Kolkey, who was recently appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to negotiate financial concessions from California's tribes. "The group discussed revenue-sharing with the state, the per-tribe cap of 2,000 slot machines, and mitigation of the impact on nearby local communities, according to a statement from the governor's office…" |
