California speaker focuses on compacts15 February 2007SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by Desert Sun: "When it comes to the tribal gambling agreements that need legislative approval, Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, said Tuesday that he has more on his mind than their controversial labor provisions. "But the speaker stressed that he does want to act on the amended agreements known as compacts, including one by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of Palm Springs. "…Last year the amended compacts to authorize 2,500 more slot machines for the Agua Caliente and similar deals for four other tribes stalled when Núñez and Assembly Democrats generally lined up with unions in a disagreement over labor provisions. "Núñez this year has said that the compacts need to be renegotiated. On Tuesday he broadened the list of issues that he wants addressed. "…Waltona Manion, a spokeswoman for the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, responded that the tribes are ready to fulfill the amended compacts that they negotiated with the governor…" |
