California Slot Supporters Collect Signatures28 January 2004ARCADIA, California – As reported by the Pasadena Star News: "Backers of an initiative that would bring slot machines to Santa Anita Park and other California racetracks now have five months to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. "…'June 24 is the last day for (proponents) to circulate the petitions. It's a 150-day window,' said Doug Stone, a spokesman for the California secretary of state's office. "Backers of the Gaming Revenue Act of 2004 must collect 598,105 valid signatures from California registered voters, Stone said. "The proposal would expand legal gambling beyond Indian tribal casinos . It would allow a total of 30,000 slot machines at five racetracks in Los Angeles, Orange, Alameda and San Mateo counties, along with 11 card clubs in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties. "Under the initiative, each racetrack would be entitled to operate 3,000 slot machines. In Los Angeles County, each 'authorized gambling establishment,' as the measure calls card clubs, would be allowed to have between 800 and 1,700 slot machines…" |
