California Slot Amendment Faces Opposition

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the (California) Press-Enterprise: "Four Inland casino tribes, a police union and three area legislators are fighting a state constitutional amendment that would allow card clubs and horse racetracks to offer slot machines, the coalition announced Monday.

"Measures passed by voters in 1998 and 2000 give Indian tribes a monopoly on Las Vegas-style gambling in California. Opponents of the proposed amendment, who call themselves Californians Against the Deceptive Gambling Proposition, want to preserve that arrangement.

"The amendment's supporters argue that tribes aren't sharing enough gaming profits with the state and local governments. If the amendment passes, the card clubs and horse racetracks would pay 30 percent of their slot-machine profits to the state and 3 percent to local governments where the gaming facilities are located.

"…'The initiative is written in such a way that is both unreasonable and impossible for all tribes to agree upon,' said Mark Nichols, chief executive officer with the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians near Indio…"
