California Senator Thinks Casino Neighbour Need Vote

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Hesperia Star: "Off-reservation casinos in the High Desert have an impact on the communities surrounding the cities that the casinos call home, according to State Senator George C. Runner, Jr., who thinks residents of those neighboring communities need to get a vote.

"On Friday, September 9, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced agreements, known as compacts, with both tribes building casinos in a twin-casino development in Barstow, the Big Lagoon Rancheria of Humboldt County and the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians of San Diego County.

"That afternoon, Runner, whose district includes Hesperia, shot off a letter to Schwarzenegger, saying the governor's approval of the off-reservation casinos would have an impact on Runner's constituents. He is concerned surrounding communities will have to deal with additional demands on their roads, police and other services without any additional revenue to compensate them for the expense.

"…Runner joins a growing chorus of politicians, both state and national, who have voiced concerns over off-reservation casinos, including Senators John McCain of Arizona and Diane Feinstein of California. The Barstow casino location is more than 100 miles from either of the tribes building it…"
