California Racing Industry Faces Declines

17 February 2004

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Alarmed by dwindling handle that has spurred purse reductions at four race meetings over the past five months, California racing leaders are currently facing a critical period as they attempt to pinpoint factors in the declines and identify potential solutions.

"Recent reductions in purses at the current Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields meets followed cuts late last year for the Oak Tree at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park meets.

"John Van de Kamp, president of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, said he has been puzzled by the declines, which followed a successful meet at Del Mar that was marked by record total handle

"…Jack McDaniel, who replaced Jack Liebau as president of Santa Anita in late January, said he would stress marketing and customer relations at the track, two areas the TOC has demanded that Santa Anita address.

"…Hollywood already set for purse cuts for spring/summer meet

"…The California Horse Racing Board's meeting on February 19 is scheduled to include a report by McDaniel and members of Magna's corporate staff on efforts to address the handle declines at Santa Anita and Golden Gate…"
