California Politicians Join Casino Battle

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Sacramento Bee: "El Dorado County has found friends in high places to help fight construction of a Highway 50 interchange that would serve the Shingle Springs Rancheria's proposed casino.

"But state officials say it likely will be the courts, not legislators, that determine whether state Department of Transportation crews break ground for the interchange before lawsuits related to the casino and its roadwork are resolved.

"Assemblymen Tim Leslie, R-Tahoe City, and Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks, recently sent letters urging that Caltrans postpone work on the interchange until lawsuits involving the interchange and casino are resolved.

"…The letters and state reaction come as both Caltrans and El Dorado County await the next possible decision affecting the legal battle to stop the interchange: Sacramento Superior Court Judge Lloyd Connelly has said that he will decide April 9 whether he will continue to hear the case.

"The battle over the interchange is the latest of numerous ways that El Dorado County has sought to block the casino project planned by the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians…"
