California Petitioners Win Decision

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the San Bernardino County Sun: "Mayor Lawrence Dale took on the First Amendment on Monday when he challenged the rights of citizens to circulate a petition supporting an Indian casino on Independence Day in a public park.

"The First Amendment won.

"Dale sought an opinion from the city attorney and the legality of the action, and the city attorney said the First Amendment rights of the petitioners must be respected and gave the green light for them to continue.

"Dale's move outraged former City Councilman Manuel Gurule, who is spearheading the drive.

"…Up to 1,000 signatures of residents favoring the ballot initiative for a casino here were collected during the three-day holiday weekend.

"…If the signature drive is successful, the initiative will be placed on the ballot in the general election, Nov. 8…"
