California Officials Erred Over Casino Statements

SACRAMENTO, California – (PRESS RELEASE) -- State officials were wrong when they said this week that Riverside, San Bernardino and other counties did not file reports with the Legislature explaining how they spent money to lessen the burdens of tribal casinos, state records indicate.

"In the budget he signed Monday, Gov. Schwarzenegger reduced from $50 million to $30 million the amount of gaming revenue that Riverside, San Bernardino and other counties will receive in 2005-06 to mitigate the effects of tribal casinos.

"…Administration officials said the reduction reflected counties' failure to file reports explaining how they spent last year's gaming revenue money. The governor's office got its information from the California Gambling Control Commission.

"Commission spokeswoman Anna Carr said Tuesday that legislative staff told agency officials April 29 that they had not received any county reports.

"But a review of state records shows that most of the 25 counties receiving the money -- including Riverside and San Bernardino counties -- had filed the reports by mid-April…"
