California Official Criticizes Gambling Industry26 October 2004MONTEREY PARK, California – As reported by the Pasadena Star: "Assemblywoman Judy Chu came out swinging Monday against political action committees set up by the local gambling industry that will spend $162,020 on campaign ads against her. "…At a news conference at the Sunday Cafe, Chu said the mailers sent out by the Los Angeles Casinos Political Action Committee are 'false and ugly.' "…The PAC is made up of the California Commerce Casino, Hawaiian Gardens Casino, Hollywood Park Casino, Hustler Casino, Normandie Casino and the Bicycle Casino. "The first mailer accuses Chu of providing favors for Indian Casinos in exchange for political contributions. An illustration on the mailer shows three pictures of Chu's face across the pay line of a slot machine, with 'Play 1 to 1000 votes' written near the slot machine handle. "The PAC is spending $87,229 on mailers against Chu, including $12,650 in support of Chu's Republican opponent Sandra Needs. "…Chu said the PAC is attacking her because she voted against SB 1524, which Chu said would have brought Las Vegas-style casinos to California cities.
