California Legislature May Reconvene Over Slots Pact11 September 2006SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the Contra Costa News: "The Legislature may reconvene to address Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's pacts with Indian casinos for nearly 20,000 new slot machines, which would create mega-casinos overshadowing Las Vegas offerings. "Republican legislative leaders demanded in a letter that Democratic leaders, who run the Legislature, 'immediately recall' both the Assembly and Senate to approve the compacts. "A spokesman for Schwarzenegger, who also has the power to reconvene lawmakers, said Saturday the governor has ruled nothing out. "Although administration spokesman Darrel Ng declined to comment on the GOP letter, he said Schwarzenegger wants the half-dozen compacts signed 'as soon as possible.' "…The governor had hoped to tout government revenue from the pacts, expected to bring billions of dollars into the state's deficit-plagued coffers, during his campaign for re-election Nov. 7 against Democratic challenger Phil Angelides. "But given to lawmakers at the eleventh hour of the 2005-06 legislative year that ended Aug. 31, Democratic majority leaders refused to approve the deals without in-depth scrutiny, starting with next year's session…" |
