California Court Won't Block Gambling Vote

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Sacramento Bee: "A state appeals court has turned down bids from California Indian tribes to block a November vote on an initiative that seeks to end the tribal monopoly on slot machines by allowing some racetracks and card rooms to run slots.

"Tuesday's action might clear the way for a long, expensive and rhetorically nasty campaign over the measure.

"In two actions last month, six casino tribes filed writs of mandate - one with the state Supreme Court and one with the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles - seeking to block the proposed constitutional amendment from the Nov. 2 ballot.

"…If approved by voters, the proposal would require all California Indian tribes with casinos to pay 25 percent of their revenues to the state and meet other stringent requirements.

"Should one tribe fail to do so, or should the governor, Legislature or courts block the requirements, five racetracks and 11 card rooms would be allowed to operate up to 30,000 slot machines. That would break the slot monopoly tribes were given by state voters in 2000…"
