California County Supervisor Backs Gambling11 February 2004CALIFORNIA – As reported by the (South California) Press Enterprise: "Supervisor Jim Venable said Tuesday that he would support legalizing gambling statewide if voters reject a $15 billion bond in March to bail the state out of debt. "Counties across the state are facing tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue the state is withholding as it addresses its own financial mess. "Venable said that putting slot machines inside racetracks and at card clubs in California is one way the state could get out of debt quickly without raising taxes. "…A coalition of card clubs and horse racetracks is working to put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that, if passed, would give them the right to operate slot machines. "The amendment could allow five existing horse racetracks and 11 card clubs, several of which are in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, to operate a total of 30,000 slot machines. The measure would forbid the opening of any new gambling establishments once the amendment is enacted…" |
