California County Cool Towards Tribal Gaming

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Fresno Bee: "The Fresno County Board of Supervisors sent a clear message on Tuesday that it wants a voice in shaping the growth of Indian gaming within the county.

"The supervisors unanimously passed two resolutions that left no doubt that the county has concerns about where the industry is headed.

"The first states that the board 'opposes Indian reservation shopping and the furtherance of Indian gaming on nontribal lands' in the county.

"The second states that the board 'opposes the expansion of gaming across' the county.

"…Fresno County has two American Indian casinos. Table Mountain Rancheria near Millerton Lake in the Sierra Nevada foothills operates Table Mountain Casino. The Big Sandy Rancheria in Auberry, in the Sierra Nevada, operates the Mono Wind Casino.

"…Gov. Schwarzenegger issued a proclamation in May 2005 containing four requirements that a tribe must meet before he'll approve a casino on newly acquired land. Among them is support for the project from the local jurisdiction, such as a board of supervisors…"
