California communities closer to casino impact money

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: "Coachella Valley and other Riverside County communities moved closer Thursday to regaining $13 million to offset increased traffic and other impacts of tribal casinos in Riverside County.

"'That is good news,' said Sen. Jim Battin, R-La Quinta, who helped shape the program. The money 'was promised by the tribes (to communities) and it will have a great impact.'

"The Senate Appropriations Committee approved Assembly Bill 1389 to provide a total of $30 million, including the $13 million for Riverside County, all of which Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger stripped out of the 2007-08 budget.

"The governor said the program needed reforms to ensure the funds are used only to offset the impact of casinos before he could consider restoring the money..."
