California Casinos Receive Support

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "Two-thirds of Barstow area residents support the placement of Indian-owned casinos in the area near the outlets malls, according to a phone survey commissioned by the developers of a project recently approved by the governor.

"Barwest, the Michigan-based development company working with the Los Coyotes and Big Lagoon Rancheria Indian tribes to bring dual-operated casino resorts to the southern edge of Barstow, commissioned the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University to poll Barstow area residents about the issue. The institute wrote a report detailing the results in May. The report was provided to the Desert Dispatch Wednesday.

"According to the poll numbers, 66.5 percent of those polled support Indian-owned casinos near the outlet malls in Barstow, while 20.3 percent opposed the casinos, and 13 percent didn't know. The institute polled 400 adult area residents by phone on May 17 and 18. The margin of error for the poll is +/- 4.8 percent…"
