California Casinos Boost Job Rates

20 October 2004

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "The annual return of fall visitors helped boost hiring in the Coachella Valley in September, with most local cities seeing their unemployment rates drop from the previous month, according to figures released Monday by the state Employment Development Department.

"The annual seasonal rise in jobs is being bolstered this year by major expansions at two valley casinos. On Monday, operators of the expanding Fantasy Springs Resort Casino held a job fair at the EDD's Workforce Development Center in Indio, aimed at filling about 250 positions.

"…Richard Moyse, employment manager for Fantasy Springs, said he had projected at the start of the day-long fair that about 500 applicants would apply for positions. By the end of the first two hours, about 200 had applied.

"Owned by the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, Fantasy Springs is completing a 12-story, 250-room hotel along with a 100,000-square-foot special events center, which have been added to the tribe's existing casino off Interstate 10 in Indio. Operators have slated a Dec. 21 soft opening for the $200 million resort.

"…Monday's hiring event followed a series of job expos held in August and September by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. That tribe saw more than 4,000 people apply for 1,000 available positions at the expanding Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon, also set for a December opening."
